Preparing Ph.D. Graduates for
Climate-Change Careers

The Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Climate Change Research (DISCCRS, pronounced discourse), connects natural and social scientists engaged in research related to climate change, impacts and solutions. The goal is to broaden perspectives and establish a collegial peer network to address climate challenges at the interface of science and society.

DISCCRS includes this website with a searchable database of Ph.D. dissertation abstracts, along with resources concerning early career development and climate change, impacts, and solutions. Ph.D. graduates who register their Ph.D. dissertations are automatically added to the DISCCRS news, a weekly electronic newsletter with time-sensitive information. Annual DISCCRS symposia bring together a select group of early career scientists interested in working across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Click here to meet the DISCCRS III Symposium Scholars and here to read the symposium report. http://www.disccrs.org/reports/DISCCRS_III_Symposium_Report.pdf

The DISCCRS IV Symposium will be held in the Tonto National Forest outside Phoenix, Arizona -- participants will provide oral and poster presentations in plenary format, hone interdisciplinary communication and team skills, and discuss emerging research, societal and professional issues with each other and with established researchers invited to serve as mentors. Participation will be limited to 34 early career scholars identified by an interdisciplinary committee of research scientists based on review of submitted applications.

This site provides access to the following resources:

  • Career/Professional Development Resources: This link provides an annotated list of resources developed for and by the symposium participants. It includes practical advice for establishing interdisciplinary careers, finding jobs, navigating promotion and tenure, developing research proposals and other aspects of early-career development.
  • Search the Ph.D. Dissertation Registry: The international compilation highlights the accomplishments of registered graduates and provides a concise overview of emerging climate change research. More than 1000 dissertations from 50 countries are currently registered. You can search the full text of all abstracts, or search abstracts by year.
  • Ph.D. Registration Form: Ph.D. graduates are invited to register a one-page abstract of their Ph.D. dissertation using this interactive form. Only those who have completed their Ph.D. may register. Once registered, your dissertation abstract wil become publicly available in the abstract database within a week or two.
  • Symposium Application Instructions: DISCCRS includes annual symposia designed to foster interdisciplinary understanding, communication, career-development and networking. Participation is by application with review by a committee of established professionals. Travel subsidies are available for the selected applicants.
  • Program Reports: Demographic information is collected as part of the registration process and is used to characterize the graduate population. This link archives the program reports.
  • Past Symposia: Considering applying to the next DISCCRS Symposium? Check out the descriptions, participant lists, mentors and other details about past symposia here.
