Preparing Ph.D. Graduates for
Climate-Change Careers
After years of specialization, today's Ph.D.
graduates increasingly find themselves on a multi-dimensional trajectory that requires
a breadth of knowledge sufficient to make connections between distant disciplines,
and a global network of colleagues from divergent backgrounds. DISCCRS
(pronounced "discourse") was founded in 2002 to meet the specific challenges involved
in building successful interdisciplinary careers dedicated to understanding climate
change and mitigating its impacts. New Ph.D. scholars from the natural and social
sciences, humanities, mathematics, engineering and other fields are encouraged to participate.
Graduates from all countries are invited to join the DISCCRS Program and apply to
be a DISCCRS Symposium Fellow.

DISCCRS II Participants at Asilomar, California
DISCCRS, Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Climate Change Research, brings together graduates across the entire spectrum of natural- and social-science fields relevant to climate change/impacts. TheDISCCRS III Symposium is scheduled for Sept. 8-15, 2007. Application deadline is April 2, 2007.
DIALOG, Dissertations Initiative for the Advancement of Limnology and Oceanography, integrates across the full range of aquatic sciences with a focus on biology/ecology.
Support for continued symposia is contingent on new funding. The next symposium will most likely be held in 2007. In the interim, please register your Ph.D. dissertation. This will place you on the mailing list for news and program updates.
This site provides access to the following DISCCRS & DIALOG resources:
- Career/Professional Development : This link provides an annotated list of resources developed for and by the symposium participants. It includes practical advice for establishing interdisciplinary careers, finding jobs, navigating promotion and tenure, developing research proposals and other aspects of early-career development.
- Ph.D. Dissertation Registry: The international compilation highlights the accomplishments of registered graduates and provides a concise overview of emerging research. More than 1000 dissertations from 50 countries are currently registered.
- Ph.D. Registration Form: Ph.D. graduates are invited to register a one-page abstract of their Ph.D. dissertation using this interactive form.
- Symposium Application Instructions: DIALOG and DISCCRS each include annual symposia designed to foster interdisciplinary understanding, communication, career-development and networking. Participation is by application with review by a committee of established professionals. Aquatic-science graduates can apply for both, but may only participate in one or the other. Travel subsidies are available for the selected applicants.
- Program Reports: Demographic information is collected as part of the registration process and used to characterize the graduate population. This link archives the program reports.
DISCCRS is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (GEO/EAR Education and Human Resources Program, GEO/ATM Climate and Large Scale Dynamics Program and SBE/BCS) grant # EAR-0435728 to Whitman College, C.S. Weiler PI, and # EAR-0435719 to University of Oregon, R.B. Mitchell PI.
